Overview
What to expect
Our studies focus on using CBD or cannabis products to improve quality of life for Veterans with chronic pain. Depending on the specific study, participants will engage in various activities like study visits (all remote), surveys, daily assessments through a study app, and wearing a device like a Fitbit.
Participants will be compensated for their time. Click on a study above for more information on what to expect as a participant.
Eligibility
Each of our three studies has specific requirements. Right now, all our available studies are for people who:
- Are 18 years or older
- Have been dealing with chronic pain for at least 3 months
- Are Armed Services Veterans
- Are interested in or currently using CBD or cannabis products for pain management
Compensation
Our research studies offer compensation to participants. Typically, compensation is given in predetermined increments after completion of required study activities, such as a study visit, coaching session, or survey.
Some studies may also provide additional benefits with monetary value, like a Fitbit or access to a cannabis coach. Click on each study above to learn more about how you can be compensated for your time.

Pain Registry
What to expect
The MIVetsCan Pain Registry Study is the first step for Veterans to participate in the Can-Coach and CBD-Care clinical trials.
Veterans who experience chronic pain and are interested in or currently using cannabis products for pain management can join the registry.
Time:
Your participation in this study will two years, with the option to continue using the study tools for a longer period if you wish.
As a participant in this research study, you have certain responsibilities, including ensuring that you complete the required surveys through the MyDataHelps app at specific time points.
If you qualify for the registry and agree to participate, you will...
- Baseline and several follow-up study visits at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months after enrollment
- Daily assessments of your pain and related symptoms. The daily assessmentswill only take about 1 minute, and you'll receive real-time feedback on yourprogress through the personalized dashboard in the MyDataHelps app
Eligibility
Taking part in the MIVetsCan Pain Registry study is completely voluntary, meaning you can choose whether or not to participate. You can also withdraw from the study at any time without any negative consequences or loss of benefits that you’re entitled to.
You'll be asked to download a smartphone application to complete periodic assessments about your symptom status and cannabis use. It's important to note that pregnant or nursing individuals cannot participate in the study.

Can-Coach
What to expect
The Can-Coach Study is a research study and educational program that offers a free Fitbit and four coaching sessions to help you effectively use cannabis products for managing pain symptoms.
Note: you’ll be responsible for purchasing the cannabis products you decide to use.
By participating, you’ll discuss how to more effectively use cannabis products available in the state market for pain management. This includes understanding different methods of ingestion, tracking your symptoms, what you are taking, how much you take, and the potential negative side effects.
Time:
Can-Coach study participation lasts for approximately 9 months.
As part of the study, you’ll also receive a Fitbit to wear, which you can keep after the study is completed.

Taking part in the Can-Coach study is completely voluntary, meaning you can choose whether or not to participate.
You can also withdraw from the study at any time without any negative consequences or loss of benefits that you are entitled to.
Please note that you cannot participate in the study if you are pregnant or nursing. Additionally, if you do choose to participate, you must agree to use effective birth control throughout the study period.

CBD-Care
What to expect
The CBD-Care trial is a placebo-controlled clinical drug trial that offers a free Fitbit and the possibility of improving your pain and other symptoms.
Note: The study drug will be provided to you and whether or not you receive CBD or a placebo will be unknown to you.
By participating, you will be providing researchers with valuable information on how CBD affects chronic pain symptoms in veterans as compared to placebo.
Time:
The CBD-Care trial participation lasts for approximately 3 months.
As part of the study, you have the option to receive a Fitbit to wear, which you can keep after the study is completed.
As a study participant, you’ll need to:
